Beyond Zero together with Mombasa County, National Council of Persons with Disabilities and partners commemorated the International Day of Persons Living with Disabilities on 3rd December 2022 by launching a Facilitator’s Guide for the Training Manual for Caregivers of Children with Disability and conducting a two day assessment and registration drive.

The launch was part of the activities at the two day Beyond Zero Medical Safari held on 2nd & 3rd December 2022 at Tudor Sub County Hospital in Mombasa County. The Medical Safari commenced with a one day sensitization of 26 healthcare workers and 4 registration officers on the revised disability assessment tools. 

Speakers at the event recognized the importance of this day that calls for protection of rights of persons living with disabilities. Beyond Zero Patron former First Lady Margaret Kenyatta was recognized and applauded for her love and support for mothers and children. 

The County Chief Officer Medical Services Dr. Khadija Shikely called for increased enrollment and diagnostic of children living with disabilities. Pauline Oginga, County Chief Officer Public Health who also represented the Governor of Mombasa emphasized on the importance of mothers to complete their antenatal and postnatal visits so that early diagnosis and assessment is available. 

The Governor’s speech recognized the importance of the Facilitators Manual that will equip caregivers with skills to provide appropriate care. The Governor recognized and applauded the partners who collaborated to develop the important tool. 

Beyond Zero also donated seven wheelchairs and eight mobility carts to the County for dissemination to identified persons with disabilities to support their needs. 

Other services provided during the Medical Safari included; assessment and registration of children with disabilities, screening for cervical, breast and prostate cancer, eye care screening and HIV testing and counseling. 

Beyond Zero in partnership with the Department of Health Services in Mombasa County, NCPWD and other partners hosted the 15th Medical Safari at Tudor Sub County Hospital in Mombasa County. The two day Medical Safari was held in commemoration of International Day of Persons Living with Disability which is observed annually on 3rd December. The theme this year was “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fueling an accessible and equitable world“.
