"No woman should die while giving birth."

The new decade began with the fifth edition of the Beyond Zero Medical Safari that was held in Nairobi City County. Set right in the heart of the city, at Uhuru Park, the 3-day safari brought together over 20 partners to provide a wide range of free medical services to the public from 22nd to 24th January 2020.

Preceding the commencement of the Medical Safari, a free fistula camp was launched at Mama Lucy Hospital which ran from 18th to 24th January 2020. Early screening for female genital fistula kicked off on 15th January in 11 health facilities throughout Nairobi City County.

Dignitaries present included CS Health Sicily Kariuki, Nairobi County Assembly Speaker Beatrice Elachi, Nairobi Health CEC Vesca Kangogo, Ag Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Wu Peng among others.

Coinciding with the national cervical cancer awareness week, the medical safari sought to provide free breast, prostate and cervical cancer screening services and create awareness on the risk factors, symptoms, prevention and importance of early and regular screening. The First Lady urged women and girls to take full advantage of the free cervical cancer screening at the safari and in health facilities.

Other health services provided at the safari include; screening for diabetes and hypertension, eye care and free cataract surgeries, hearing aid services, orthopedic services, maternal check-ups, NHIF, Linda Mama and registration of differently-abled persons to the National Council of Persons with Disabilities (NCWPD).

During the launch of the safari, the First Lady visited women undergoing fistula surgeries at Mama Lucy Hospital where she gifted them with dignity packs and also officially opened the Kangaroo Mother Care Wing at the same hospital that will nurse pre-term babies. At Uhuru Park, the First Lady commissioned a hemafuse, a surgical device for autotransfusion, donated by Amref Health Africa.

As a champion for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of HIV and Syphilis (eMTCT), the First lady launched the Nairobi County eMTCT Business Plan 2019-2022, aptly named “Tulinde kizazi jijini.” The eMTCT plan will act as a guiding structure for Nairobi County to achieve the WHO target of <5% MTCT rate.
