The First Lady Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta launches the inaugural Beyond Zero
Medical Safari in Narok County.
On 8th March 2018, Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta launched her 2nd Strategic Framework “The Strategic Framework for the Engagement of the First Lady in the Promotion of Health Lives and Well-being of Women, Children and Adolescents, 2018-2022.” The Framework is anchored on the principle of leaving no one behind and adopts a lifecycle approach targeting; pregnant women and newborns, infants and children, adolescents and young persons, women, men and the elderly. To engage with these diverse population groups, Beyond Zero adopted an outreach model dubbed “Medical Safaris” as one of the key instrument of engagement.
The Medical Safaris use a partnership model to deliver free specialized healthcare services. These services include; provision of surgical repairs for women living with obstetric fistula, screening for cervical, breast and prostate cancers, comprehensive eye care screening including cataract surgeries and provision of reading glasses; antenatal care profiling; assessment and registration of persons with disabilities among others. The Medical Safaris also provide an advocacy and health education platform for obstetric fistula, elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, cervical cancer screening.
The inaugural Medical Safari was held in Narok County, at the County’s Stadium on 11th-13th September 2018 and was launched by Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta. Over 4,000 residents of Narok County and neighbouring counties received a wide array of free health services including obstetric fistula screening and surgical repairs, screening for reproductive tract cancers among others. Additionally, Her Excellency also launched the Narok County eMTCT business plan that will provide guidance for resource allocation and implementation of eMTCT programming in the County.
