"No woman should die while giving birth."

The fourth Beyond Zero Medical Safari was held in Nyandarua County on 14th-16th August 2019 at Engineer stadium in Engineer sub-county and was launched by Her Excellency the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya Margaret Kenyatta.

Before launching the safari, the First Lady visited Engineer sub-county hospital where she commissioned a 64 bed capacity mother and baby wing. The launch was attended by the Cabinet Secretary for Health Sicily Kariuki, NACC CEO Dr. Nduku Kilonzo, Nyandarua County Governor Hon. Francis Kimemia, Governor’s spouse Ambassador Anne Kimemia among others.

The First Lady also launched the Nyandarua County elimination of Mother to Child Transmission (eMTCT) of HIV and Syphilis 2018-2022 business plan. The business plan details Nyandarua’s strategies and implementation approaches to achieve <5% eMTCT transmission rates in the county. The Medical Safaris bring together partners from private, development and government sector to provide free primary healthcare services. The services provided are in line with the Beyond Zero 2nd Strategic Framework lifecycle approach and the county health profiles.

In her speech, the First Lady applauded the people of Nyandarua for showing up in large numbers to receive the free services and especially screening for reproductive tract cancers. She said “Cancer screening for breast, cervical and prostrate saves lives, and I am encouraged to see that today so many men and women have come out in large numbers for the free screening.” The First Lady also commended the National Council for Persons with Disability for registering children with disabilities to ensure they benefit from the Government social protection program, health care and education services.

Nyandarua County becomes the fourth county after Kisumu, Narok and West Pokot counties to host the Beyond Zero Medical Safari.
