"No woman should die while giving birth."

Thousands of Tharaka Nithi County residents benefitted from a week-long free Medical Safari hosted by Beyond Zero in partnership with the County Government and other partners.

Services provided included;

Obstetric Fistula screening and surgical repairs; in commemoration of the International Day of Ending Obstetric Fistula, which is observed annually on 23rd May 2022, a free fistula camp was held at the Chuka Referral Hospital at 21st-27th May 2022. Prior to the camp, 55 healthcare workers selected from various health facilities within the County underwent a two day sensitization workshop on obstetric fistula prevention, screening and pre and post-surgical care. Screening for fistula was conducted in the following sub county health facilities on 16th-20th May 2022. Chuka County Referral Hospital, Mpukoni Health Centre, Magutini Hospital, Tharaka Hospital, Kibunga Hospital, Gatunga Model Health Centre, Kathangacini Health Centre, Kajuki Health Centre and Muthambi Health Centre.

Speaking during a partners meeting held on IDEOF in Kathwana, the spouse to Tharaka Nithi Governor, Mrs. Margaret Njuki commended the Beyond Zero for their advocacy efforts to reduce the prevalence of obstetric fistula among girls and women.

“We are happy, ready and willing to continue walking the journey of partnership together in order to save lives and restore women’s dignity,” Mrs Njuki said.

The free fistula camp was supported by SlovakAid, UNFPA, AMREF Health Africa, Mpesa Foundation and the Flying Doctors Society.

On 25th-26th May 2022 at Kathwana Stadium, a variety of specialized health services; screening for reproductive tract cancers, comprehensive eye screening and free cataracts surgeries, oral health screening and teeth extraction, assessment and registration of persons with disabilities, ultra-sound screening, HIV testing & counseling and Linda mama registration. These services were provided with support from; Tharaka Nithi County Department of Health, National Council for Persons Living with Disabilities, National Health Insurance Fund, Philips, Beth Mugo Cancer Foundation, Women4Cancer Early Detection & Treatment, AIDs Healthacre Foundation, VisionSpring, Lions SightFirst Eye Hospital, Airtel and Health Relief International.
