The two-day free breast and cervical cancer screening outreach by Beyond Zero, in partnership with the Embu County Department of Health, concluded successfully today at MUFU Dispensary in Runyenjes, with a remarkable turnout of women and girls of all ages seeking preventive healthcare services.
The strong community response underscored the growing awareness that early detection saves lives. Hundreds of women took advantage of the free screening services, health education, and referrals, reaffirming the importance of bringing quality healthcare closer to the people. By taking these services directly to communities, Beyond Zero continues to remove barriers to access while empowering women to take charge of their health before disease progresses.
A key highlight of the outreach was the use of the county’s newly activated high-tech HPV DNA testing technology, now available through GeneXpert machines at Embu Level 5, Runyenjes Level 4, and Ishiara hospitals. The advanced screening method is faster and more accurate than traditional Pap smears, with samples processed locally to significantly reduce waiting times for results, ease anxiety for patients, and ensure timely follow-up care where needed.
Beyond screening, participants also benefited from comprehensive health education sessions covering cervical and breast cancer prevention, sexual and reproductive health, menstrual health, sexuality, personal hygiene, and the importance of seeking medical attention early. These health talks equipped the participants with practical knowledge to make informed decisions about their health while encouraging healthy lifestyles and regular screening.
