National Conference on Workplace Protection Closes with Renewed Call for Safe and Decent Workplaces

WEDNESDAY, 27TH MAY 2026: The two-day National Conference on Workplace Protection concluded yesterday at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete, with renewed calls for stronger systems, accountability, and action towards creating safe and decent workplaces across the public sector. Held under the theme “Evidence to Action for Safe and Decent Workplaces in the Public Sector,” the conference brought together policymakers, government leaders, development partners, researchers, and workplace safety advocates committed to advancing workplace protection in Kenya.

Speaking during the closing session, Lady Justice Njoki Ndungu underscored the constitutional and human rights foundation of workplace protection, noting that “Article 28 enshrines the inherent dignity of every person, while Article 29 declares that no person should be subjected to violence, whether physical or psychological, in public or in private.”

In her presentation, Secretary to the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya Mercy Wanjau called for stronger systems, responsive reporting mechanisms, and collective action to translate evidence into practical reforms that protect every worker across Kenya’s public institutions.

Throughout the conference, participants engaged in keynote addresses, presentations, panel discussions, and interactive Q&A sessions centered on key issues including national evidence and research findings on workplace violence, the economic and productivity cost of workplace violence, institutional accountability and reporting systems, access to remedies and redress mechanisms, workplace safety and decent work in the public sector, and a collective call to action on implementing safe workplaces in Kenya.

The conference concluded with a shared commitment among stakeholders to strengthen workplace protection systems, deepen collaboration, and champion policies and practices that foster safer, healthier, and more inclusive workplaces for all.
