Building Safe and Decent Workplaces in Kenya’s Public Sector

The National Conference on Workplace Protection commenced today at the Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete, bringing together government leaders, development partners, and workplace safety advocates for a two-day dialogue on strengthening protections in the public sector. Held under the theme “Evidence to Action for Safe and Decent Workplaces in the Public Sector,” the conference reaffirms Kenya’s commitment to revitalizing workplace protection systems and advancing the ratification of International Labour Organization.

Speaking during the official opening ceremony, Dr. Jane Kere Imbunya, Principal Secretary for Public Service and Human Capital Development and Chief Guest at the conference, underscored the importance of workplace protection as a cornerstone of effective public service delivery and national development.

She noted that protecting workers goes beyond policy compliance and is fundamental to building productive, inclusive, and resilient institutions. “Protecting workers is not only a moral obligation, but also a strategic investment in productivity, innovation, institutional effectiveness, and national development. This conference provides an important platform for deepening collaboration and generating practical, sustainable, and forward-looking recommendations that will help shape safer, healthier, and more inclusive workplaces for all,” she said.

The conference has been convened through the Margaret Kenyatta Institute for Gender and Social Development in partnership with #BeyondZero Initiative, International Labour Organization, IFC – International Finance Corporation, Oxfam and COVAW among others, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing safe, dignified and decent workplaces across Kenya’s public sector.
