FIRST LADY HER EXCELLENCY MARGARET KENYATTA LAUNCHES SECOND STRATEGIC FRAMEWORK (2018 – 2022)

8 March 2018, Nairobi- The First Lady of Kenya, Her Excellency Margaret Kenyatta has launched her second Strategic Framework that will provide guidance in the execution of her mandate over the next five years.

Titled ‘A Strategic Framework for the Engagement of the First Lady in the Promotion of Healthy Lives and Well-Being of Women, Children and Adolescents’, the document highlights the First Lady’s agenda from 2018 – 2022, and places high priority on the health of Kenyan women and their families.

The Framework adopts a life-cycle approach, placing people at the center of health care systems and provides an opportunity to address Kenya’s changing health needs through quality of care. It addresses challenges at different stages of life; from newborn to infancy, through childhood, to adolescence, adulthood and eventually, old age.

Launched at a ceremony in State House, Nairobi, the new Framework builds on the achievements recorded during her first term as Kenya’s First Lady (2013 – 2017). These are successes that she attained through her platform; Beyond Zero. Beyond Zero is a catalytic instrument of propelling and accelerating actions to improve health outcomes in the country. Beyond Zero compliments ongoing interventions and investments by various actors at local, county, national, regional and international levels.

The new Framework is aligned with the ideals of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Government of Kenya’s commitment to provide universal health care to every citizen by 2022, together with the health goals outlined in the Vision 2030 blueprint. Besides strengthening the HIV and AIDS response in Kenya, and strengthening the maternal and newborn healthcare system, the new Framework addresses emerging health challenges that are affecting women today. These include obstetric fistula and reproductive health cancers.

The nine areas of intervention that will form the focus of the First Lady through this new Framework are:

  • Promoting access to quality maternal and neonatal healthcare services
  • Advocating for repair and reintegration of women living with obstetric fistulae
  • Championing country validation for the pre-elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV by 2021
  • Promoting good nutrition for all children
  • Advocating for social inclusion of children living with disability for their equal access to health and education services
  • Mobilizing partnerships to deliver adolescent and youth health programs
  • Influencing investments for decentralized services for breast and cervical cancer prevention, treatment and management
  • Mobilizing male engagement in HIV and AIDS, and reproductive health
  • Advocating for access to comprehensive healthcare and social protection

To achieve her goals, the First Lady will continue to work with a host of partners, among them: the national and county governments, members of the private sector including the business community, Non-Governmental Organizations and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) -including Faith-Based Organizations.
